Procedure to Insert A Checkbox In Microsoft Word [2 Methods]
There are a few steps required to insert a checkbox in Microsoft Word. At first, you need to enable the Developer tab, you’ll need to:
Method 1: Using a “Developer” Tab
Step 1: Open your Word document in which you want to add a checkbox.
Step 2: Click the “File” from the top left of your screen. Then, select “Options” from the list that appears.
Step 3:
- In the “Word Options” dialog box, click “Customize Ribbon” on the left side.
- In the “Customize the Ribbon” list on the right side, select “Main Tabs”.
- Scroll down the list and select “Developer”.
- Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box.
- The “Developer” tab should now be visible in your Microsoft Word Ribbon.
Now you’re able to insert a checkbox into your Word document by using the Developer tab:
Step 4: In the Developer tab, click “Check Box Content Control” in the “Controls” group. An empty checkbox will appear in your document.
Here, the issue is that the checkbox appears as “X” by default. You might want it to be a checkmark. To customize your “X” checkbox into a checkmark, you’ll need to:
- Click the “Properties” in the “Control Properties” to view or modify the selected checkbox properties.

The selected checkbox should now appear as a checkmark. However, In the same process, you’re able to mark it as an “X” or uncheck the checkbox.
In the same process, you can un-checkmark, to do so click Developer>Properties. In the “Content Control Properties” dialog box right next to Show As: click the dropdown menu and select “None”.
After selecting “None” click below the “OK” button.
Now you can see your checkbox appear in your Word document.
Method 2: Inserting a check box in printed documents
Step 1: To insert a checkbox into your paint document without a developer tab, you can use the Home tab>Paragraph group>Bullets.
Step 2: To create a new bulleted list click the “Define New Bullet” option in the bullet dialog box.
Step 3: In the below Bullet Character click “Symbol”
Step 4: In the Symbol dialog box select font “Wingdings 2” Now select the checkmark symbol and then click the “OK” button.
Step 5: Now your checkmark symbol will appear on your printed document. Also, you can copy the symbol where you want.
